My Writing Journey

My story as a writer begins in my early twenties when I worked as a freelance writer, publishing newspaper articles on topics such as the impact of the Farm Crisis on rice farmers, the story of how a rural town landed Louisiana’s first Federal Detention Center, the first female boat captain on the Mississippi, the 83-year-old author of The Cajun Dictionary, and more.

Two years later, I attended graduate school at George Mason University where I earned an MA and embarked on what has evolved into a lily-pad career. I've taught writing at universities, in K-12 public schools, in a vocational school, and as well as retirement communities.

In my essays, I seek to explore the significance of ordinary objects, attachment to place, family, and the growth and transformation that transpires when we expose ourselves to difference.

Currently, I'm working on a collection of essays focused on growing up in small town Louisiana during the tumultuous 60s and 70s and how the experience informed my identity.

You can find my essays in Brevity, HuffPost Personals, Short Reads, Hippocampus Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, New Delta Review, and elsewhere.
